I have been taking pictures for over sixty years. My first camera was a BROWNIE 127 for my birthday, for Christmas that year I upgraded to a PRAKTINA SLR. At that time the fastest shutter speed was 1/1000 second and film was ISO 800. The technology has changed but the basic exposure triangle of shutter speed, aperture settings and ISO are the same. Today it is possible to buy a camera with shutter speeds of 1/32000 second and ISO values in the tens of thousands.

For black and white film the grain of the film dictated the ISO. In colour photography colour balance is important. In the days when film was the only medium different manufactures had different colour film tints, Agfa-red, Kodak-blue Fuji-green and each batch was slightly different. Setting up colour film was a long process and buying batches of colour film was a good practice.

Now a colour card checker is used to take the photograph and calibrating your monitor and printer is the best practice. I spent over eight years with KODAK in their technical department using many different cameras and setting up processors.

The knowledge of film, paper and developing solutions were and important part of the work. Printing is now in most cases a dry process using colour printers but wet processing is still an important process in fine art photography. Technology has changed the basics remain the same.
